Farmers 'always working against the calendar'

October 24, 2008
By Laura Gossman, Rochester Post Bulletin staff writer
KASSON -- This year's fall harvest seems to be moving at a combine's pace.

Kasson farmer Brian Jorgenson said Wednesday that his family had only harvested 250 acres of the 700 acres of corn they planted this spring.

His progress on his fields was halted by rain showers Wednesday after a couple of hours.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Minnesota Field office's weekly crop report, farmers had only harvested 19 percent of the corn in Minnesota as of Sunday.

Last year during the same week, 51 percent of the crop had been harvested, and on average 43 percent of the crop is harvested by this time.

"It's definitely been slow going," said University of Minnesota Extension Office Crop Specialist Lisa Behnken on Thursday. "I've seen a lot of combines in the field, but there's still a lot of corn standing out there."
