Iowa Governor signs same-day registration into law

April 4, 2007

Iowans will be able to register to vote moments before casting their ballots.

Gov. Chet Culver signed a bill into law Tuesday allowing Iowans with proof of residency and photo identification to register on Election Day.

Voters must sign an oath acknowledging they know that any untruthful information on the registration could result in a fine of up to $7,500 and five years in jail.

Current law requires voters to register 10 days before primary and general elections and 11 days before other elections.

Supporters of the legislation predict voter turnout will go up by as much as 5 percent.
