League of Rural Voters Urges FCC To Approve Merger

The League of Rural Voters has contacted the FCC with support for the proposed merger between Sirius and XM.
In a letter they state that the merger would provide "more programming options at lower prices"
The League also cites that consolidation of terrestrial radio stations have left rural ares behind as' "locally owned stations have been replaced by mega-corporate conglomerates which produce homogenized content and so-called local news and weather delivered from offices hundreds of miles away. The emergence of satellite radio has offered listeners in rural areas a robust alternative with hundreds of specialized channels that cater to the programming needs of rural America"
These are some very strong words that not only support the merger, but cast a dagger at the claims of the NAB about 'local programming". For those that like to compare this merger to the Direct TV and Dish merger, it is interesting to note that the concerns over rural areas was a central subject of debate.
