League of Rural Voters Joins National Coalition in Call for Rural Development in 2007 Farm Bill

(09/18/07) MINNEAPOLIS - The League of Rural Voters (LRV) has joined over 500 national, regional and local organizations in a letter to Senator Tom Harkin, (D-IA) calling for a strong and fully-funded rural development package as part of the 2007 Farm Bill.

As part of the letter, the Campaign for Renewed Rural Development, championed Harkin's commitment to the Rural Development and Investment package in the farm bill legislation, but calls on the Senator and the federal government to "renew (their) commitment to partnering with public, private, nonprofit, civic, education, philanthropic and other organizations who are working tirelessly to improve our nation's rural economies and communities."

This letter marks the first time that this level of nationwide support has been shown for rural development. In addition to LRV, the letter also includes signatures from groups as diverse as the National Conference of State Legislatures and the Sustainable Agriculture Coalition. A copy of the sign-on letter can be found at the League of Rural Voters website www.leagueofruralvoters.org.
